Blanchflower honoured

Mon, 30/03/2015 - 21:33

The Ulster Historical Society have unveiled a plaque in East Belfast in honour of Danny Blanchflower. Danny won 56 caps for Northern Ireland, captaining the team in Sweden at the 1958 World Cup finals and he was also the national team manager in the late 1970's.

Blanchflower is probably most remembered for captaining Tottenham Hotspur to the league and cup double in 1961 but his football career began with Glentoran. He broke into the first team towards the end of the 1945-46 season and scored his first goal for the club in the final Regional League fixture of that season in a 3-1 defeat to Distillery at Grosvenor Park. Danny played in two Irish Cup finals for the Glens, 1947 against Belfast Celtic and 1949 against Derry City. Unfortunately he was on the losing side on both occasions. In total Danny Blanchflower made 126 appearances for Glentoran and scored 7 goals.

He moved to Barnsley and then Aston Villa before joining Spurs in 1954. Danny Blanchflower passed away in 1993 aged 67.
