Academy Update

Wed, 29/10/2014 - 18:17

It is hard to believe but we are almost a quarter of the way through the 2014/15 season and this season is already shaping up to be a record breaker for the Academy!

To date we have had 42 players either currently in advanced trials with or selected for Northern Ireland squads at various ages from U11 to U19. The stand out stories here being 10 players at under 15 and 10 players at under 14 in the relevant NI squads - more than any other club!

The star turns for this season will of course be the three young men in the Northern Ireland Victory Shield Squad from our under 16 team - Tre Sterling, Jack White and Lucas Galashan have been chosen for the squad to face Scotland, this coming Friday live on Sky Sports from St Mirren Park.  A special mention also to Oliver Webber from our U15 who has been placed on the standby list for the game. Everyone at Glentoran wishes them the very best for the upcoming games and fans are reminded they can catch the games on Sky Sports and track the progress of our young charges!

In addition to this we have had numerous players travelling across the water for trials with pro clubs in England and Scotland with no fewer than 6 players having been flown across to Liverpool in recent weeks; we currently have a player on trial this week at Manchester United, one at Everton and one at Sunderland.

In addition we have three boys currently in a trial process with Rangers FC, two travelling to Nottingham Forest and three lads from our U13 represented Manchester United's development squad recently in Northern Ireland . Partick Thistle, Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic have also taken Glentoran Academy players on trial in recent weeks.

U13 players Charlie Anderson, Callum McVeigh and Matthew Willis

We as a club continue to strive to produce players ultimately for our own first team but it is a real feather in our cap to have clubs such as those mentioned above showing such a strong interest in several of our players and shows the tremendous work our skilled and dedicated coaches are producing.

We look forward to updating the wider Glentoran family of all the players progress in the month's ahead.
