In this new series we plan to bring extended interviews with some of Glentoran’s greatest ever players, speaking to Media Director Ian Clarke about many interesting aspects of their long, trophy laden careers with the Glens.
Glentoran Gazette contributor and former editor, John Grayden, first saw the Glens play in May, 1959. In this series he picks imaginary sides from throughout the years in a random selection of categories. A few are factual while most are subjective and by no means definitive. While he has seen the majority of the players in action, some from other eras are included because of their contribution to the club’s history.
This is the third in a series of interviews with former Glentoran players and managers where they talk about a photograph that means a lot to them. Some will be reproduced from a series written by Brian McClelland for the Glentoran Gazette in the mid-1990s with other, newer stories we will be writing over the next few weeks. This one was published in the Gazette in the 1994/95 season, when Brian met midfielder Andy Mathieson.
Glentoran’s preparations for an eventual return to normal activity took a positive step forward this week with the installation of a CovidGuard machine in the Players’ Entrance at the Oval.
This machine automatically gauges the temperature of anyone seeking entry to the changing room and tunnel area, and either approves or refuses admission based on the temperature of the individual. It also has a built-in dispenser of handwash.

Tommy Morrow in action at Highbury

In the second part of this career retrospective interview with legendary Glentoran manager Tommy Jackson, Tommy spoke to Ian Clarke about the second half of his trophy laden tenure. Not least about two seasons that will live foirever in the memory of any Glentoran supporter lucky enough to have witnessed them.
Marcus and Aimee Kane’s #HikeForHarrie campaign to raise £10,000 for bereavement services at RVH Maternity has exceeded double that figure to currently stand at a fantastic £20,409!
For the third in this series on our league or cup winning managers of the past four decades, we concentrate on our six and a half seasons under Tommy Jackson. In trophy terms, Tommy Jackson is jointly with Roy Coyle, the most successful manager in Glentoran’s history. Ian Clarke spoke to Tommy, still a regular at Glentoran matches.
