Setanta Sports Cup Group 2
Derry City 2 - 0 Glentoran
Tuesday 2nd September
|
|
|
Glentoran failed to ignite their Setanta
Cup campaign as they lost 2-0 against Derry City this evening at The
Brandywell.
The game started brightly as the Glens
had most of the possession creating chances for Glentoran debutant
Andrew Waterworth and Michael Halliday in attack. Unfortunately
these chances could not be capitalised on as Derry City gained momentum
midway through the first half.
A Johnny Black foul on the edge of the
Glentoran penalty area led to the first goal as Ruaidhri Higgins placed
his direct free kick into the top corner of Elliot Morris's net.
From this point the Glens struggled to
get into the game, but were not ruled out of the game. Alan
McDonald made a tactical change after half time, bringing Daryl Fordyce
into play, replacing Kyle Neill. This appeared to strengthen the
midfield, but was not enough to take the Glens to victory.
The second half saw Glentoran
attempting to hold on to possession and form a more flowing style of
play, however again this could not be capitalised on.
The final goal ended the game on 85
minutes as Mark Farren pounced upon a spilled ball in the Glentoran goal
mouth to tap in. This confirmed the result with only 5 minutes left as neither
team had any goal scoring opportunities before referee Ian Stokes blew
the finals whistle.

Sean Goes Waltzing Matilda
Tuesday 2nd September

Popular Enniskillen based supporter, Sean
McManus is off down under for the next 5 months or so and we are sure his
many friends at Glentoran will miss him over that period. Probably one
of the most popular guys around the Oval, Sean has endeared himself to the
supporters with his dedicated pursuit of the team, never mind the weather or
the results.
His round trip from Enniskillen, some 170 miles or so, is
not a problem to this genial guy, when even a home match has to be considered
as an 'away' match. Fact is that Sean can often be found at a Glens
reserve team fixture midweek!
While overseas you can be sure that Sean will be
surfing the waves, and the web for all things Glentoran. Sean has our best
wishes for a successful journey and it is no surprise that he is timing his
return for the serious 'business end' of the season. We look forward to his
return to the Oval.

The senior players of Glens BU took time out from
their busy schedule of winning League titles, preparing for European competition
and getting to the final of the IFA Women's Cup for the 3rd successive year, to
do a bit of fund raising for the Club by participating in a collection at the
Oval.
The girls were grateful for all the support
they received from the fans at the Oval and appreciate their generosity.

JJB
Sports Premiership
Glentoran 2 - 1 Cliftonville
Saturday 30th August

Alan McDonald left The Oval happy tonight
after a double success both on and off the pitch. Prior to today's
game the Glens added to their strike force with the signing of the
highly sought-after Andrew Waterworth from Hamilton Academicals on a
three year deal. Colin Nixon, however, was the hero of the day
securing a last minute goal securing Glentoran's first win of the JJB
Sports Premiership.
The Glens began slowly and had some
difficultly finding their stride. This was only confounded by an early
goal by Francis Murphy on 4 minutes.
It took some time, but Glentoran began
to play more to their strengths and a goal looked on the cards.
This time it was Gary Hamilton who stepped up to fire home after the
ball fell to him in the penalty area.
At 1-1 the game looked as if it was
running out of time, and the sending off of Jamie McGovern for an off
the ball incident it seemed as if the game would finish a draw.
This was not to be. Being reduced to 10
men and the introduction of Dean Fitzgerald and Darren Boyce seemed to galvanize
the Glentoran team and forced them to play a more passing style.
It was from here that Colin Nixon found
himself covering the right wing position where he drilled the ball hard
from a tight angle on the right. Through a mass of players the
ball somehow managed to hit the back of the net, sealing victory for the
Glens in the 94th minute.

the highly rated striker Andrew Waterworth from Hamilton
Academicals. Andrew signed a 3 year deal with the Glens for an

stint at Ards, but made a name for himself at Lisburn Distillery
garnering much attention from the rest of the league. Andrew
secured a move to Hamilton Academicals, but now returns home with a
desire for first team football in the rejuvenated JJB Sports Premiership.
Glentoran.com and Forza TV are pleased
