Gary Hamilton grabbed the headlines
again today, as his goal scoring
exploits were the biggest difference
between the two teams in this hard
fought and competitive early-season
match.
But
it was the home side who started
brightly in the blustery conditions,
forcing Dougherty into a smart save from
Ward's long-range effort in the opening
minutes.
And
a few minutes later, it was former
Glenman, Gary Browne, threatening
Dougherty's goal from a free kick, but a
strong defensive wall averted any
danger.
The
Glens then started to come more into the
match, and began taking more control of
the ball and dictating the tempo of the
match.
It
wasn't long before Hamilton took centre
stage, but it wasn't until he suffered
following a clash of heads in the centre
circle. Thankfully, Hamilton was able to
continue, and within a few minutes, the
ball was in the back of the home net.
A
neat interchange between Nixon and
Fordyce on the right wing, saw a low
Nixon cross heading towards Scullion.
The former Dungannon man made an
intelligent run to the near post,
drawing the attention of Distillery
defenders away from the lethal Hamilton,
who made no mistake from close range
when the ball arrived as his feet.
Five
minutes later, as the Glens kept the
pressure on, Philip Simpson almost
doubled the lead, but as he got on the
end of a corner, his headed effort went
wild.
As
half-time approached, the Whites mounted
a revival and a series of corners added
pressure to the Glens defence, but good
work at the back prevented any real
openings coming their way.
Distillery's
luck was to change a couple of minutes
later, as Waterworth broke clear into
the box. Dougherty produced a smart
save, and was unfortunate to see the
ball come back to Waterworth. He was
able to centre the ball onto the head of
Youle, who made no mistake with his 10
yard header to level the game at half
time.
As
the second half started, Glentoran came
out of the blocks faster than they did
in the first half. On 49 minutes
Scullion broke into the box from the
right wing, and was disappointed to see
his early effort deflected over when it
seemed destined for the net.
But
the visitors didn't have to wait too
long before taking the lead for the
second time. A dangerous Kyle Neill
evaded all defenders, and landed on the
head of Hamilton, who headed in one of
the easiest goals he will get this
season.
Glentoran
continued to apply pressure, and looked
like adding a third after Halliday and
Scullion created an opening for Fordyce,
who was unable to find the target.
After
this, the Glens took the foot off the
pedal and began to sit back, content to
allow the home team possession at the
half way line.
Distillery
however, were unable to actually create
an opening until the final minutes, when
a looped header from Waterworth was
comfortably tipped over by Dougherty.
