It was a match that had been 12 months
in the making, played by two football
clubs steeped in history, to celebrate
125 years of football for the pride of
East Belfast.
The
red carpet was rolled out for the
multi-millionaires of Manchester United,
who are now in the final stages of their
preparations for the new season as they
will attempt to defend their Premiership
crown. And United didn't disappoint
their legions of local fans, with their
strong team running out 3-0 winners in
the glamour tie.
The
visitors started brightly, looking
dangerous from the outset, and it took
just 4 minutes before Fraizer Campbell
took advantage of indecision in the
Glens defence to give United the lead,
albeit with assistance of an unfortunate
deflection off Jason Hill.
And
it wasn't long before the lead was
doubled. A Gary Hamilton free-kick in
the 13th minute was well defended by
United, and a swift break found the
Glens stretched at the back. When the
ball came to Evra, he made no mistake in
finding the back of the net.
United
new-boy Anderson began to come more in
to the match, showing glimpses of the
flair that fans can expect to see this
season. But his best effort, a low drive
from 20 yards, was comfortably taken by
Dougherty.
The
Red Devil's flying start continued, and
on 35 minutes, Nani cut in from the
right, and as the defence backed off, he
curled a sweet right footed effort
across Dougherty's goal and into the top
corner to make it 3-0.
By
this point most Glenmen must have feared
that their dream friendly would turn in
to a nightmare. But that was the end of
the scoring, thanks in no small part to
the role played by Paul Leeman.
United
continued to look sharp, dictating the
pace of play across the pitch, with
Michael Carrick and new-signing Nani
particularly dominant.
But
they were continually foiled by the
stoic figure of Glens captain, Paul
Leeman, intercepting passes and standing
firm against the pacey and tricky United
attack.
The
Glens first sight of goal came in the
41st minute when good work from Hill and
Hamill ended with a ball into the box,
which just eluded Philip Carson.
And
just seconds before the break, Dean
Fitzgerald did well to
pick up a poor United clearance. His
quick thinking almost paid dividends,
but his rasping shot flew past the post.
As
the second half started, only Paul
Leeman and Michael Dougherty remained
from the Glentoran starting line-up. The
second half was passing quite
uneventfully, when Vidic picked up a
head injury and had to be replaced.
This
seems to spur the home side on, as BJ
McMenamin and Michael Ward in particular
inspired some moments of doubt in the
United defence.
On
80 minutes, Ward broke down the wing and
his dangerous cross was almost turned
into his own goal by John O'Shea. The
resulting corner dropped to Adamczyk,
but he could not make proper contact and
his shot was cleared off the line.
The
ball then came to McMenamin, whose
dangerous ball in was cleared from
Adamczyk at the last moment.
As
the Glens began to push for a goal, good
work from Halliday created an
opportunity for McMenamin at the back
post. As the cross came in, BJ must have
wished it was on his left foot, but his
right foot volley from 8 yards was
comfortable enough for Heaton in the
visitors goal.
It
was the last action of note for either
side, on what was a hugely successful
night for Glentoran Football Club, and a
useful work out for the experienced, and
not so experienced in the United squad.
