Glentoran Women

Belfast United was formed by a group of employees of the Probation Board for NI in 1987. In 1995 they obtained promotion from the Northern Ireland Women’s Football Association Division 2 and then reconstituted themselves as Belfast United. Throughout the 21st century the Club has arguably been the most successful women’s football Club in N.Ireland, competing in the UEFA Women’s Cup competition in the last two  years as league champions of Northern  Ireland. In2009 they competed in Sweden against Lincopinga professional women’s team, eventually losing 2-0 but evidence of the Club’s increasing maturity in the competition..

Belfast United has its roots in the East/South Belfast area, although it draws players from a much wider geographical area. The Club has a strong link with Glentoran Football Club and is perceived as the ‘female’ wing of that Club albeit that Belfast United is a separate entity. This link was made in 2004 and has seen positive benefits for both partners.
