Glentoran Colts
unbeaten so far after 8 league games played Lisnaskea Rovers in the 2nd
round of the Harry Cavan Cup at the Blanchflower Stadium on Saturday 27th
October 2007.
The opening 15
minutes saw a fairly even game with both teams closing each other down
and a lot of the play contested in the middle of the park resulting in
neither keeper having a save to make.
The Glens however got
the break through on about 18 minutes when Buckley came in off the right
flank and received the ball near the edge of the box before unleashing a
left footed shot past the Lisnaskea keeper.
On
23 minutes the Glens made it 2–0 when Brannigan fired a 30 yard free
kick low into a packed box and Southam scrambled the ball home. This
seemed to settle the Colts and they started to pass the ball around
better. After 30 minutes a through ball to Steele 10 yards inside the
Lisnaskea half saw him out run the defence and slot the ball calmly past
the keeper to make it 3–0.
The game became very
broken up after this as Lisnaskea’s frustrations resulted in the
referee awarding the Glens a number of free kicks. The
travelling team were then reduced to 10 men when one of their players
received a straight red card after he stood on Glentoran captain Andy
Doyle as he lay prostrate on the ground after a tackle in the middle of
the pitch.

Lisnaskea Rovers 0
The Glens started to
control the game with the extra man showing as they kept the ball and
passed in around. They forced a number of corners and 5 minutes into the
half made it 4-0 when a cross to the back post saw Southam rise above
everyone to make it 4-0.
With 35 minutes left
the Glens made 2 substitutions with Selfridge and Quinn coming on for
Whiteside and Southam.
Selfridge should have
made it five with his first touch but somehow put the ball over the bar
after a good save by the keeper from a long range shot. The fifth goal
however did arrive shortly after good interplay between Holmes and
Selfridge down the left saw Selfridge pull the ball back from the dead
ball line to Holmes who fired into the far corner. The Glens then
brought on Craig for Buckley with 30 minutes to go.
The Glens had a
number of chances to increase their lead but these were squandered by
Steele, Selfridge and Hunter among others and the Lisnaskea keeper made
a number of good saves. Selfridge then got on the score sheet to make it
6-0 when he fired into the far bottom corner from about 15 yards out on
the right hand side of the box.
The Glens were
dominating play and sub Craig was making a number of good runs down the
right hand side and it was from one such run as he cut into the box he
was brought down and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Craig
picked himself up to take the penalty and placed it in the bottom corner
to give the keeper no chance and make it 7-0.
The final and
possibly best Glentoran goal came just before the final whistle when
Doyle played a 25 yard pass to Selfridge a couple of yards outside the
Lisnaskea box on the right hand side. He turned and showed good close
control to evade the challenges of four Lisnaskea players before
slotting the ball into the far left hand corner of the net from just
inside the box
